Broadly speaking we can divide the hair curling methods into two categories;
- Non Thermal Methods
- Thermal Methods
Non Thermal Methods
Finger Waving
Finger waving is the art of shaping or molding hair while wet into "s"-shaped curved undulations with the fingers and comb. These waves when dried without being disturbed will fall into beautiful deep waves. Finger waving differs from Marcel waving in that there are no irons used on the hair. Not only naturally curly or permanently waved hair can be finger waved, but it is equally successful on straight hair.
Rag Rollers
Rag rollers are the more refined form of natural hair curls that have been used historically by Caucasian women who preferred curly hair over straight hair.
Rag rollers are simply strips of cloth used to twist and tie your hair into a curl shape. These are still popular to curl hair particularly in kids or in those who want to sleep with these soft rollers.
Non Electric Rollers
-
Velcro Rollers; These are small rollers with velcros used in hair
care for styling and curling hair, with the aid of a blow dryer or hair styling
products like hair gel or mousse. These are easily available in market in different
widths and sizes.
- Foam Rollers; These are comparatively latest innovation, where
foam is used to make them soft and gentle for hair. These are also available in
different sizes and beautiful colors.
- Pin curls; These were popular in the 1920s, especially on shorter
hair, for making well-defined, skinny curls worn tight to the head.
Thermal Methods
Electric Rollers
Electric hair rollers are also called heated rollers, hot rollers or hot curlers. It
is a tool used to curl hair with the help of heat. There are a wide range of different
brands in the market that sell them not very expansively. As a result, you can select
the one suitable for your hair according to their diameters and lengths.
Like other heated tools these can be really damaging for your hair, so do not use them

Curling Irons
These are the most popular hair curling tool nowadays. Like hot rollers, curling irons
are also manufactured and marketed by numerous companies and are available in
different sizes and with the slight modification of shapes. These are handy to travel
with and easy to use, however, it can be time consuming hair has to be curled in small
portions.
Perms
The perm refers to permanent waving of hair to create a curl or wave in the hair by
electric and/or chemical treatment. As a short this permanent waving is termed as
perm. This curling is permanent because once created it always remains so,
however, as the hair grows, the new hair that grows has not been waved, while cutting
the hair from the end removes that which is waved, giving the impression that the
permanent wave gradually disappears.
Initially chemical perms were introduced which made the use of ammonium thioglycate
and hydrogen peroxide, later on acid perms were invented, were ammonium was excluded
from the process. This perm is slower but gentler to the hair and are the recommended
method all over the world. However, recently digital perms are introduced which use
hot rods with the temperature regulated by a machine, which has a digital display.
These are also called hot perms and are popular in Japan, Korea and other Asian
countries.
